Protecting Yourself from ID TheftWe pride ourselves on solid and effective identity theft protections. That means that we will do all we can in order to make sure that you are protected. However, did you know that you can do a lot to protect yourself from identity theft as well? We like to think of it as your own personal identity theft protections. If you learn how to effectively protect yourself then you will be at the forefront of identity protection. Handle Your Documents with Great CareA lot of people do not think that they need to handle documents like receipts and bank account statements with care. It is important that you do not just throw away these things into any old garbage can. These files contain very important information and are what thieves will target, especially because they know people are careless with this information. If you have very important documents you are afraid of losing then you should look to get a safety deposit box with a bank. Document theft is high and is often the main target. If you have a safety box at home, and it is well protected then you can also use that. If certain documents are getting old and you do not believe there is use for them any longer, you still should not throw them away. Cut them up and make sure all the important numbers are not connected and cannot be put back together. Even though these documents may be old it is possible that they still might have the current numbers on there. Identity theft protections begin by making sure all important numbers are safe. If you have a shredder or access to one, then that would be perfect. When we use the word documents we are even referring to "junk mail." You will sometimes get pre-approved credit card offers in the mail. You should not just throw these away. If they are intact in the garbage, some thief could fish them out of the can, fill them out and have them sent under your name to a place of their choosing. Your credit is now at risk. See what we can do for you. |
Use Caution on the TelephoneThe telephone is another way that these thieves can strike. These people like to call up your house and say they represent a financial institution or even the government. They could tell you that you owe a certain amount of money and this is where they would like for you to send it. Do not just comply. You need to ask them questions about their company, and what this money is for. You could even ask to speak with a supervisor. If you have any doubt in your mind then you should refrain from their request until they can further meet your needs. Make it known to them that you are not interested in playing games, and this whole process will go a lot quicker if they are able to comply with you and let it be known they are telling the truth. ![]() |
