What are the risks of identity theft? There may be unexpected bad marks on your credit

Are You at Risk?

It is very possible that you may not believe that you are at risk of having your identity stolen. This is not true however, because everyone can be at risk of having some parts of their identity stolen. We want our identity theft protections to stop this before it even becomes a problem. You may even be able to see the warning signs. This will be good because you can stop them before it becomes too late. Another thing that happens to people is that they believe they do not need identity theft protections, but then they have some parts of their identity stolen even though they thought they were being careful.

The Signs

There are some early warning detection signs that you can follow. If you notice any of the following things then we suggest you take action right away because you already might be at risk. The first sign is if you see unfamiliar transactions on your bank account statements. This is exactly why it is so important to check accounts, because you may see transactions on there that you did not make. This is very possible that it could be a bank error, but if it keeps happening then you know something is wrong. Alert your bank immediately so that way you can know if it is in fact a bank error. This should alert you to the fact that you need to check your credit report frequently. You may find that a lender turns you down for credit, but you did not think that this was going to happen. If you feel like you would normally qualify for a loan, then consult your credit report. There may be unexpected bad marks on your credit. This could be a mistake, or it could be fraud. Your bank account statements and credit report are two things you must check and become familiar with.

One of the ways that thieves strike may sneak under the radar. You may stop receiving bills or other important financial documents in the mail. You may just think that those companies messed up somewhere along the line and misplaced your address. This, however, is one of the ways identity thieves can strike. They can fill out a change of address form and have your important documents rerouted to their address. That way they can open your mail and find all your important account numbers.

Some people may think this is the traditional method but it still holds true today, and that is having your purse or wallet stolen. This is still really common and puts you at a lot of risk. The moment you have your wallet or purse stolen you need to alert the proper people. That includes your bank and any credit cards you have. Cancel them immediately because the risk is great and now forthcoming.

We will cover some of the terms used by identity thieves later on when we talk about the most common things that identity thieves steal. For now, examine how you can protect yourself from identity theft on the next page.
